It may not have started well for Oklahoma on Wednesday night but it sure ended with a fantastic bang. Wichita State put the Sooners in a 4-0 hole in the top of the first, thanks in part to a Neleigh Herring three-run blast over the left field fence.
Following scores from Lynnsie Elam and Eliyah Flores in the bottom of the second, Grace Lyons returned the favor with a three-run shot of her own to give OU a 5-4 lead.
An inning later Elam sent her team-leading eighth home run of the season to extend Oklahoma’s lead to 6-4.
The Shockers made things interesting again in the top of the fifth with a solo home run to right field that pulled the score to 6-5. However, an inning later Jocelyn Alo sent Oklahoma’s third home run of the night into orbit. Her two-run homer to left boosted the Sooners back to an 8-5 lead that would end up being the final score.
Senior pitcher Shannon Saile relieved starter Olivia Rains with no outs in the top of the fourth. She inherited a 4-0 deficit but held Wichita State to just one more run over seven innings of work, striking out five batters along the way, to improve her season record to 6-3.
Oklahoma (16-4) will play four games in two days on Friday and Saturday against Mercer, Utah, Murray State, and Missouri State. All four games will be at Marita Hynes Field.
