Thunder Hold On for Hard-Fought Victory Over Memphis Grizzlies

The Oklahoma City Thunder secured a narrow victory over the Memphis Grizzlies 118-112 on Saturday night. While the win keeps the Thunder tied for first place in the Western Conference, it wasn’t the dominant performance some might have expected against a Grizzlies team missing Ja Morant and Desmond Bane, among several others, for much of the season.

Chet Holmgren Leads the Way

Chet Holmgren continued his impressive rookie campaign with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds. Jalen Williams also chipped in a strong performance with 23 points and 6 assists. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 20 points, but struggled with his outside shot, going just 1-for-6 from three-point range.

Grizzlies Hang Tough Despite Injuries

Despite missing key players, the Grizzlies hung tough throughout the game. Desmond Bane, making his first appearance since January, led Memphis with 22 points and 7 assists. Jaren Jackson Jr. and GG Jackson also had strong performances, each scoring 19 points. The Grizzlies even led by as many as 10 points in the first half.

Cause for Concern?

While the win keeps the Thunder atop the conference standings, the close contest against a depleted Grizzlies team raises some questions. Oklahoma City’s offense struggled at times, particularly from beyond the arc. The team will need to find more consistent scoring options to compete with the league’s elite.

Looking Ahead

The Thunder’s next test comes against a tougher opponent. They’ll face the Utah Jazz on Wednesday, a team still very much fighting for a spot in the Play-In Tournament. This matchup will be a better gauge of where the Thunder truly stand in the Western Conference hierarchy.

Room for Optimism

Despite the concerns, there are reasons for optimism in Oklahoma City. The young core of Holmgren, Williams, and Giddey continues to develop, and the team is playing with a winning mentality. The close win over Memphis can be seen as a learning experience, and the Thunder will look to tighten things up heading into a crucial stretch of games.
