Baker Mayfield Lights Up Stillwater: Records Shattered in Bedlam Shootout
Baker Mayfield cemented his Heisman hopeful status with a record-breaking performance in the 2017 Bedlam game, leading the Oklahoma Sooners to a thrilling 62-52 victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
Mayfield rewrote the Sooners’ record book, throwing for a staggering 598 yards and a school-record five touchdowns. He wasn’t just a threat through the air, adding a rushing touchdown to his stat sheet with a Heisman moment for the ages – stiff-arming an Oklahoma State defender on his way to the end zone and even flashing the signature pose.
The Sooners’ offense was unstoppable, amassing a school-record 785 total yards, the most in a Bedlam game ever. Mayfield’s favorite target was Marquise Brown, who hauled in nine receptions for a school-record 265 yards, including touchdown grabs of 84 and the record-setting 77-yarder from Mayfield.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading touchdowns. Mayfield threw for a jaw-dropping 387 yards before halftime, keeping the Sooners right in the thick of it.
The second half remained tight, but Mayfield kept making crucial plays. After Rodney Anderson extended the lead to 48-38 with a touchdown catch, Mayfield found Brown again for the record-breaking 77-yard score. Despite Oklahoma State’s valiant efforts to close the gap, Mayfield’s brilliance proved too much to handle, securing a memorable victory for the Sooners in a historic game.
