Top In-State Talent Highlights Oklahoma’s Defensive Line Haul

June has been a banner month for Oklahoma Sooners football recruiting. Brent Venables and his staff have been on fire, reeling in several key commitments that significantly strengthen their position in the 2025 recruiting class.

The crown jewel of their June pickups is in-state standout CJ Nickson. Ranked as the No. 9 edge rusher nationally by 247Sports, Nickson chose the Sooners over their in-state rivals, the Oklahoma State Cowboys. This wasn’t the only defensive coup for Oklahoma. They also secured a commitment from fellow defensive lineman Alex Shieldnight, another highly-rated in-state prospect (Wagoner) late last year.

These defensive pickups solidify the end position for the Sooners’ 2025 class. Nickson and Shieldnight add depth and talent to a crucial position on the field. With rumors of them also securing 3-star DE Kade Pietrzak next, it’s clear that building a strong defensive line is a priority for Venables and his staff.

The Sooners’ recruiting success extends beyond the defensive line. June also saw them land commitments from wide receivers Marcus Harris and Emmanuel Choice, as well as quarterback Jaden O’Neal (class of 2026) and tight end Ryder Mix (class of 2026). Overall, Oklahoma has added a total of six of the top ten in-state prospects, showcasing their dominance in their own backyard.

The momentum isn’t likely to slow down either. The ChampU BBQ recruiting event seems to have played a significant role in solidifying Nickson’s decision and potentially influencing others. With the strong foundation they’ve built in June, Oklahoma can expect to see more talented recruits joining an already impressive 2025 class.
