Oklahoma Sooners vs Texas Longhonrs | How to Watch, Storylines, Odds, & Predictions

Saturday’s Red River Rivalry has all the makings of an old-school defensive slugfest when the No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners (5-0) meet the Texas Longhorns (3-2) at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Oddsmakers have Texas as a slight 1.5-point favorite, with a modest total of 42.5 points — a number that reflects just how dominant both defenses have been through the first half of the season. Oklahoma enters the matchup undefeated after a 44-0 shutout of Kent State, a game that showcased why the Sooners own the nation’s No. 2 scoring defense. Brent Venables’ team is giving up just 7.2 points and 193 yards per game, including a suffocating 52% opponent completion rate and only 2.4 yards per rush. Offensively, the Sooners have been efficient if not flashy, averaging 33.8 points per game behind a balanced attack that’s produced 19 total touchdowns. Even with questions surrounding quarterback John Mateer’s thumb injury, Oklahoma’s defense has proven capable of carrying the load.

Texas, meanwhile, will look to rebound after a 29-21 loss to Florida that exposed some cracks in its offensive consistency. The Longhorns must find a way to move the ball against the most disciplined defense they’ll face all season. Through five games, Texas averages 419.2 yards per contest and nearly 30 points per game, but penalties and turnovers have stifled momentum in key spots. The Longhorns’ defense, however, remains elite — surrendering just 12.0 points per game, 79.6 rushing yards per outing, and only three passing touchdowns all season. That unit will be crucial against a physical Oklahoma offense that has found success grinding out drives behind a strong rushing attack. With two top-five defenses and a long history of drama, Saturday’s showdown feels destined to come down to turnovers, field position, and whichever team’s quarterback handles the moment best under Cotton Bowl pressure.
