Oklahoma Softball won their two opening games at the GCU Kickoff Tournament, in Phoenix, Arizona, by a margin of 13-1. That was a slow start when compared to the three games the Sooners played between Saturday and Sunday.
Coming off back-to-back run rule wins on Saturday, Oklahoma went into Sunday’s finale having outscored their previous two opponents 22-1.
Taking the circle in her first start as a Sooner, FIU transfer Shannon Saile threw all five innings of Sunday’s shortened contest against San Diego State. In doing so, she allowed just one hit and struck out eight batters as the OU offense backed her with nine runs in four innings to secure the win.
Caleigh Clifton got Oklahoma’s scoring started when she came home on an error in the first inning. Sydney Romero would follow her by crossing home plate, off an RBI ground out by Grace Green, allowing the Sooners to close out the opening frame with a 2-0 lead.
A pair of solo home runs by Clifton and Grace Lyons doubled OU’s lead to 4-0 in the top of the second but the real fireworks came in the top of the fourth when Oklahoma scored five runs.
A pair of throwing errors and a passed ball brought Romero, Fale Aviu, and Jocelyn Alo home for the first three runs of the inning. Then Green scored on a Nicole Mendes single to left field before Reagan Rogers finalized the day by scoring OU’s ninth run off an RBI sacrifice by Lyons.
Oklahoma’s 9-0 win on Sunday locked up a 5-0 start to the season. The Sooners will next travel to Clearwater, Florida for the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational. They’ll face Kentucky and Notre Dame on Thursday in a Valentine’s Day double header that will air on ESPNU and ESPN 3.
