The Oklahoma City Thunder continues a 5-game homestand on Sunday night, hosting the New York Knicks. Tonight’s game is sure to be another close one as the Thunder try to hold on to the top spot in the Western Conference, while the Knicks try to overtake the Boston Celtics for the #2 spot in the East.
With just a handful of games remaining and OKC just now getting to full strength, it feels like Mark Daigneault needs to tighten up the rotation a bit. The Thunder doesn’t have many weak opponents remaining, which is actually kind of a good test ahead of the playoffs. If that is the case, I like the Thunder’s odds to win this one by a reasonable margin. OKC has a better offense, a better defense, and better chemistry. I think the Thunder matches up really well with the Knicks, particularly because of OKC’s depth, and when it comes down to the final minutes, I think Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is a better closer. Despite the Thunder being in the second game of a back-to-back—and the Knicks having a day of rest—I think the OKC covers. Playing in front of the home crowd definitely seems to make a difference for the Thunder, and Jalen Brunson is questionable for New York. His potential absence would be a pretty big blow in a tough game like this. Top-to-bottom, I think OKC is the better team, and I think they pull away late to cover the spread.

The best way to move on from an ugly loss is to pick up a good win, and fortunately for OKC, they get that opportunity tonight in their own second game of a back-to-back when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Timberwolves are also coming off a bad loss—a 113-112 defeat in San Antonio against the Spurs—so they are also looking to get back into the win column.

Sunday’s loss to Detroit is a pretty gross stain on what has been an otherwise beautiful season thus far. Regardless of how awful that performance was, the Thunder are much more likely to play well in front of the home crowd, especially considering the quality of the opponent. Minnesota is also coming off a bad loss, one on the road against the Wizards, so I anticipate this game will come down to the wire, and the Thunder will get the edge to cover late.
