Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys

2019 Big 12 Football Power Rankings | Week 9

M. Hofeld

What are we supposed to do with Texas? That seems to be the debate this week among our writers. Just in case you were in a coma, or live in a cave, the Longhorns used a field goal, as time expired, to get past the lowly Kansas Jayhawks in Austin on Saturday night.

While no one is mistaking Texas as being the best team in the conference, the general debate is if they should be ranked #2, #3, or even #4. Below are our rankings and a few explanations of our thought process.

Heartland Sports Week 9 Big 12 Power Rankings

1. Oklahoma50
2. Baylor44
3. Texas40
4. Iowa State36
5. Texas Tech25
5. Kansas State25
7. TCU20
7. Oklahoma State20
9. West Virginia10
10. Kansas5

1. Oklahoma | The Sooners continue to put on an amazing display of defense each week. They’ve looked unbeatable so far, but the toughest stretch of their schedule lies ahead.

2. Baylor | The Bears are catching some national attention as they move into the top 15. They will have a shot at both Oklahoma and Texas in a couple of weeks.

3. Texas | The Longhorns barely made the top three for me this week after edging past Kansas at home. Texas is on a slippery slope right now. Will they turn it around, or will we see another Texas meltdown?

4. Iowa State

5. Kansas State

6. TCU

7. Texas Tech

8. Oklahoma State

9. West Virginia | The Mountaineers have only one win and it’s over the Jayhawks. They have some winnable games remaining, but it’s not looking good for West Virginia.

10. Kansas | The Jayhawks put up a memorable performance against the Longhorns last weekend. That might’ve been their last chance at an upset this season.

1. Oklahoma | Another thrashing by the Sooners. Nothing new over here.

2. Baylor | It’s hard to argue with 7-0. I’m still not convinced they’re anywhere near as good as Oklahoma or Texas, but they’ve yet to lose, so who knows.

3. Texas | I don’t know what it is about Texas struggling with Kansas, but sheesh. That would’ve been an AWFUL loss.

4. Iowa State

5. Texas Tech

6. Oklahoma State

7. TCU

8. Kansas State

9. Kansas | I can’t believe I’m moving the Jayhawks up even though they lost, but they seriously almost beat the Longhorns, and they were even closer than West Virginia was a few weeks ago.

10. West Virginia | It was close (kinda) in the first half against the Sooners. Ugly finish, though.

1. Oklahoma |  Posting another dominant performance, the Sooners continue to distance themselves from the pack.

2. Baylor | Time and time again, the Bears simply get the job done. Collecting a road win over the weekend, Baylor could easily be 9-0 in the very near future. Undefeated and rising in the rankings, we’ll learn just how good this team is toward the end of the season.

3. Iowa State | After an initial loss in conference play, the Cyclones are starting to live up to expectations. Behind consecutive road wins, ISU’s Big 12 title hopes remain intact. Improving at this point of the season means that Iowa State will be a difficult pairing down the road.

4. Texas | A two point win over Kansas was not exactly ideal. This team has questions galore on the defensive side of the ball.

5. Kansas State

6. TCU

7. Texas Tech

8. Oklahoma State

9. Kansas | Are the Jayhawks getting better? That’s a difficult question to ask but this team has the ability to score points given the opportunity. That’s not something I can say about the next team on the list giving a bit of a lift to KU.

10. West Virginia | The concerns at quarterback only scrape the surface of what’s going on in Morgantown. A blowout loss only magnified the issue as WVU falls to the bottom of the pack.

1. Oklahoma | Another solid all around performance for the Sooners, except for the Schooner, with the 52-14 victory over the Mountaineers.

2. Baylor | The Bears had a back and forth with Oklahoma State in Stillwater until dominating the 4th quarter and winning 45-27.

3. Texas | Dicker the Kicker has another walk-off, game-winning field goal helping the Longhorns beat Kansas at home. Texas travels to a struggling TCU this weekend.

4. Iowa State

5. Texas Tech

6. Oklahoma State

7. Kansas State

8. TCU

9. West Virginia | The Mountaineers had a long day after getting thumped by Oklahoma. They get to regroup in a bye week then head to Waco.

10. Kansas | They nearly pulled off the upset of the day in Austin. With that, a part of me wanted to move them up but they lost to West Virginia this season so I couldn’t.

1. Oklahoma | Saturday’s win over West Virginia was probably the best overall performance by the Sooners since the UCLA game.

2. Texas | My colleagues are going to take issue with this but hear me out. The only two losses the Longhorns have this year are to #6 LSU and #6 Oklahoma. OU fans will remember how uncomfortable they felt playing Kansas in Norman last season, but we also know how everything played out.

3. Baylor | I picked the Bears to crash homecoming in Stillwater but I didn’t expect that kind of beat down.

4. Iowa State

5. Kansas State

6. Texas Tech

7. Oklahoma State

8. TCU

9. West Virginia | The bye week couldn’t have come at a better time for the Mountaineers. They are in desperate need of regrouping.

10. Kansas | The Jayhawks were so close in Austin on Saturday!
