Thunder Against the Spread | OKC Nearly a Double-Digit Favorite for Noon Tip-Off Against Minnesota
OKC is 1-2 against Minnesota this season, and the Thunder hasn’t covered in any of those three games. These two teams know each other VERY WELL, and as a result, it’s created a lot of close meetings over the last couple of seasons. 5 of the last 7 regular-season games between the Thunder and the Timberwolves have been decided by single digits, and I think this one will be the same. One thing to keep an eye on: Anthony Edwards is listed as questionable with knee soreness, but I anticipate that he plays. If he has to miss, the Timberwolves could struggle to stay afloat. Isaiah Hartenstein is questionable as well, and while I don’t think he plays, he would help the Thunder out tremendously down low. While I’m taking the Thunder to win, I like Minnesota to cover.

The Oklahoma City Thunder sits atop the Western Conference standings, but maintain their positioning could get difficult as they enter the toughest part of their schedule so far this season. Tonight, the Thunder heads to Minnesota to take on the Timberwolves, who have won two straight after losing their previous 5 games.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are probably about as close to a rival to the Thunder as anyone. 12 out of the last 19 meetings (including last year’s playoffs) have been decided by single digits, and that is likely to happen again tonight. Although Isaiah Hartenstein is making his return for OKC, the Thunder is still without Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace, Alex Caruso, and Ajay Mitchell. Meanwhile, the Timberwolves are almost entirely healthy. While I do think the Thunder can pull out the win—Minnesota has been streaky lately—I do think the game will be decided in the last couple of possessions.

The Oklahoma City Thunder bounced back in a big way in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals as they led the Minnesota Timberwolves for nearly the entire game, holding on late for the 128-126 win to take a 3-1 lead in the series. Now the Thunder has a chance to close out the series at home, earning their first appearance in the NBA Finals since 2012 and just the second in franchise history.

This could certainly be a game that the Timberwolves win, sending the series back to Minnesota, but I expect the Thunder to close out strong in front of the home crowd. On the cusp of just the second NBA Finals appearance in franchise history and coming off a fantastic performance from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren, don’t be surprised if the Thunder wins this one by double digits.

Game 3 was a masterpiece for the Timberwolves and an atrocity for the Thunder. As close as the spread was, the final score was not. This game features another close spread, and OKC has done a great job following up bad performances with good ones. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is not likely to have another bad performance, and the supporting cast will follow his lead. Take the Thunder to rebound with a win and cover the spread.

Oklahoma City has looked dominant through the first two games against the Minnesota Timberwolves, but it might be unrealistic to expect the same thing in Game 3 in Minnesota. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has played just like an MVP should, and Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren both rounded out solid performances in Game 2, making the Thunder’s big 3 look unstoppable. The Timberwolves aren’t going to go quietly into the night, though.

Based on the last two games, a spread this small seems like a given. BUT, this is Game 3, not Games 1 and 2. The Thunder just needs to win the game to cover this spread, and while the odds are certainly in OKC’s favor to win the series, that doesn’t mean they’re going to sweep the Timberwolves. Still, I can’t help but think Oklahoma City will win this one a day after Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named to his third consecutive All-NBA First-Team and Jalen Williams to his first All-NBA Third Team.

The Oklahoma City Thunder came out a bit flat against the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 1 before having a monster second half to propel them to a 114-88 win and a 1-0 series lead. Following the win on Tuesday night, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was finally announced as the NBA’s Most Valuable Player after an incredible season. With the announcement finally made, it feels like OKC can refocus all their attention to the run they’re making at an NBA Finals trophy.
