Oklahoma City Thunder | Game #80 Preview: Los Angeles Clippers
After Tuesday night’s 123-87 win over the Los Angeles Lakers, the Oklahoma City Thunder needs just one more win to clinch the best record in the league, securing homecourt advantage through the playoffs. The Thunder continued making history with the win in LA, becoming the first team ever to win three consecutive games by at least 35 points. Tonight, they wrap up their stay in Los Angeles with a matchup against the Clippers, who are also playing in the second game of a back-to-back. A win would make OKC just the third team in NBA history to record 64 wins in back-to-back seasons.

OKC needs just one win in the final three games of the season to clinch homecourt advantage through the playoffs. The Clippers are still fighting for position in the standings, so each of their remaining games is incredibly important. While I do think this is a close game, the Thunder is obviously the better team and has been playing lights out basketball recently, so I like them to win this one comfortably.

The most revealing part of Oklahoma City’s season did not come during a 16-game winning streak. It came after it ended. Following a narrow, high-level…

It took OKC’s worst shooting night of the season for the Spurs to pull off the narrow victory, and it won’t soon be forgotten. The Thunder has their off games—just like any other team—but one thing they do well is bounce back in a big way. OKC lost consecutive games just twice all of last season, and considering how heavily favored they are in Thursday night’s matchup with the Los Angeles Clippers, it’s not likely to happen now.

The last time these two teams met was a 126-107 victory for the Thunder in Los Angeles, and Thursday night’s matchup may have a very similar result.

OKC and LA are tied in the Western Conference standings right now, along with the Mavericks and the Pelicans. Because of tiebreakers, however, the Lakers are in 9th place while the Thunder is in 11th. With just 9 games left in the season, literally every game is going to change up who is in a playoff spot and who isn’t. While both teams really need to win, the Thunder REALLY needs to win this one. OKC has not been in a “must-win” situation for years, but this meeting probably qualifies. With that in mind, I’m taking OKC to at least cover if not outright win the game as well.

It’s been just two days, so not a lot has changed in this matchup except for the fact that Paul George is out of this one with a sprained knee. That’s a big blow for the Clippers on both sides of the ball. Still, it’s tough to beat a good team over and over again, particularly twice in a couple of days. A good coach like Ty Lue is extremely capable of making adjustments, and that could very well be enough to win this game. Still, I think OKC can pull out another win tonight, so I’m taking them to cover the spread.

It’s been less than 48 hours, but once again, the Oklahoma City Thunder is prepared to take on the Clippers in Los Angeles. On Tuesday night, the Thunder got off to a horribly slow start, trailing 18-4 just a few minutes into the first quarter, but OKC managed to turn thing around quickly to take a small lead into the second period.

Similar to the OKC, the Clippers had a rough return to play after the All-Star Break. Also similar to OKC, they are clicking at just the right time, as they have won 5 of their last 6. On paper, LA is the better team because of star power, but the Thunder plays hard enough to compete with any team on any given night. I don’t know if OKC can pull out a win on the road tonight, but I do think they keep it close enough to cover the spread.
